ROAD WORKS.

THE question as to whether reasonable provision is to be made for carrying on road works in the district during the summer is forcing the attention of all classes of the community as the season draws on. Judging from the scheme of the Government on the subject there is little on be hoped for in the near future and the prospects of any material progress being made with the metalling of the main roads are not bright. As far as the Te Kuiti—Awakino road is concerned the pushing on with the work of metalling during the present season is of the utmo ft importance. The spread of the dairying industry in the district renders it necessary for the settlers to have at least proper means of transit for their butter from factory to railway, and without a considerable amount of work on the road during summer it will be impossible to have the output from the factories brought over the road earlier than December. This means too great a handicap for any factory, and we are once again confronted with an impossible position. This is merely one of the many strong reasons why the road should be put in proper order and it is sufficiently important to affect the whole of our outdistricts. With a view to urging upon the Government the urgent necessity of making a reasonable sum of money available immediately for the main road, the Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce is to meet on Wednesday evening when it is probable that steps will be taken to send a special deputation to Wellington to make representations to the authorities.
