MANGAPEHI.
Own Correspondent. - Football. - On Saturday afternoon last a scratch team was raised in Mangapehi to play the Maori team from Tiro a, who had come down to Mangapehi to play Ongante, the latter team, however, not turning up. When the two teams lined out it was very noticeable that the Maori team was considerably heavier than the white, stripping on the average about three stone heavier. The lighter team, however,proved too quick for their weighty opponents, defeating them by 7 points to 3. For Mangapehi H. Donkin did tbe scoring, potting a goat from the field, and shortly afterwards placing a penalty goal. In the last minute of tbe second spell the Maori* succeeded in scoring a try, which was-unconverted. Inspector Burnside, M.A., has just concluded bis annual inspection of the local school. He expressed himself as well satisfied with the progress of the scholars, considering the adverse conditions under which tbe school work has been carried on during the year. Promotions will not be made until January Ist,l9lo,when the new school year commences. The local Bachelors have decided to give a Plain and Fancy Dress Ball on Friday October 29th. Tbe affair is to be carried out in style, and an energetic committee has been formed to carry the thing through and they have determined to spare neither time nor expense in making it a success. It is rumoured that a large number of fancy dresses are to be worn,.
