PIOPIO.
(Own Correspondent) It is rumoured that a new store is to be erected at Piopio during the summer and with the factory also being erected an impetus will be given to the industrial life of th place. Feed is coming away very fast and everything is throwing off the winter coat Even the roads are on the mend, and it is surprising how the mud has dried during the last few days. Both settlers and Natives are making great preparations for the starting of tbe dairy factory, and with tbe ploughing and grassing operations tbat arc proceeding a considerable increase in pasture should result. The local people mean business and are getting the wheels oiled ready for the road. I am very glad to report that our new neighbours are beginning to arrive. I mean the lucky ones in the ballot for the Totoro Block, and as they are all married men with families it spells advance to Piopio. If the ! new men are all like the advance guards we are going to have a good class of settlers and Piopio extends them a hearty welcome. —The Dairy Factory.— A large meeting of the suppliers and those interests! in the Company was held in the Miroahuiao Hall last Saturday, and a considerable amount of business was done.
Everything is going along slowly but surely. The Directors seem to be driving the thing on good, sound lines, and are evidently determined to make the proj«-c: n success. More power to (hem. Now that the new settlers artcoming, it will be a great help to litem, and thr district generally. The following resolution was carried: "That this meeting of intending suppliers to the Piopio Dairy Factory strongly recommend to the Government the urgent necessity of metalling the main road, so as to give the best means of getting butter to market." Mr Elliott was appointed to convey the resolution to Wellington. The Roads Question.- -
A largely attended meeting of settlers was held at the Miroahuiao Hall on Saturday to discuss the question of metalling the roads. Mr 0. Elliott occupied the ehair. Mr R. Livinston was appointed Secretary and Tresurer. After several of the settlers hail spoken on the subject, it was decided to adopt (he programme framed by the meeting at Te Kuiti, each motion being dealt with separately. Mr G. Elliott was ap|»ointcd as delegate to represent the Piopio settlers on the deputation to Wellington, and it was also decided to write to the member, Mr Jennings, informing him what was being done and asking him to assist the delegates. It is to he hoped the other districts will follow suit, as unity is strength, and we shll require plenty of that to get anything done.
