OHURA SPRING MEETING
Py "TirSTKf:." Good nominations we beli-ve arc being received Cor the various events at th«> Ohura Spring Meeting, to be held on September 2?lh. The event which i 3 causing the most interest, locally of course, is the Otangiwai Handicap, for which, we believe, there are three entries ail of which will face the starter: SLOW TOM YOUNG SIR COLIN PIJUN BILL A word or two rergading the contestants may not be out of place at this juncture. I have noticed Slow Tom out several times lately doing steady work on the track, but so far he appears to be lacking condition and will need to improve considerably before the date of the race to have any chance of annexing the Handicap. Young Sir Colin, who, by the way, is somewhat new to the turf, has been out in the "track," pretty regularly lately .morning and evening, and I wes surprised to see what fine form he is in for the short tim«» he has been in hand. I have only seen him doing short spins bat he gallops in real good style and those who are in t|ie know say that he is a great stayer. Plain Bill has been doing heavy work cn the "track" for some considerable time, and is looking a bit on the fine side already, and there is a danger of his bccomnig stale before the race eventuates. I have watched him several mornings and evenigs doing a spin over th? short course and though some think he is doing well, I must confeS< to disappointment as I have watched him. He has a queer gait of going mul docs not seem as clean in the action as ho might be and his past performances do not warrant much confidence being placed in him. In the "Education Cup" run last April he could only run into the fourth place and it is on open secret that he ran inside two flags at the back of the Course, otherwise he would have been left still further in the rear. In the Great Northern Ohura Steeple Chase he was hopelessly out of it, though if he had not baulked at the Water jump he may pessiby have run into a place. I hear he is going to gallop over the full course on Saturday next, and he will be carefully watched to see if he finishes up sound in wind and limb Anyway my impressions at present are that even if he gres straight; which is doubtful he will not lie able to beat the Black Colt Who, I believe, will "dance" home, and my tips are: 1. YOUNG SIR COLIN
2. PLAIN BILL 3. SLOW TOM
