MATIERE.

Own Correspondent.

i The annual meeting of the Maticre Public Hall Committee took place on Saturday evening last the 28th when a report of the previous year was submitted by the Chairman, Mr A. Hyde. At the beginning of the year the i committee took over office with a clean sheet: no money in hand and no debts excepting a liability of 19s 6d per month owing on the piano. During the year the committee have been very successful and are able to carry forward a credit balance of £ll 10s 6d. ; A contract has been let for painting ' the hall which will take a considerable amount of the funds now in hand. During the year an entertainment was given by the Matierc Dramatic Society the purpose of raising funds to line the hall, and timber was | obtained with the proceeds, part of the ! lining had been put up, and the committee will endeavour to have it | completed. Owing to the members of the committee being rather scattered and the bad state of the roads it has been impossible for them to meet as | frequently as they would wish, with I the result that the management has I been pretty well left to the Chairman ! and Mr I.e Cocq. the secretary. j On the old committee retiring the i following were elected: Messrs Mor- | peth, Cha?e, Hyde, Le Cocq. Stanley, I Ryan, Bm:U. Mr Hyde being re-elected \ chairman rind Mr Le Cocq. secretary i and treasurer. Mr J. Boult was ap- | pointed caretaker of the Hall at a salS ary of £-1 per annum. | It was decided to hold monthly social* the first to take place on 25th September. The ladies are to be asked to provide light refreshments, the gentlemen's subscriptions to go | towards the hall fund. A most enjoyable dance was held at Matiere on the 27h inst, which took i the form of a basket social and proved a great success. The baskets were numerous and most tastefully got up, for which all the ladies deserve great credit. Mr Fred, Stanley made an | excellent auctioneer and in many cases the bidding was very keen. After all expenses were defrayed the balance which amounted to £3 lis, was handed i over to the Piano Fur.d. Mrs Hyde kindly supplied the music for the evening, and was greatly appreciated, and vocal items wree rendered by Messrs Cullen and Stanley. Quite a large crowd of people assembled at the residence of Mr C, Ralph last Tuesday evening to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Whisten and family, who have disposed of their property and arc leaving for Australia. During the evening Mr C. Ryan presented Mrs i Whisten with a silver entree dish, salt ! cellars, and pepper caster, and Mr T. i De Vere Hunt presented Mr Whisten with a travelling bag. Dancing and musical items were then gone through the party breaking up in the "wee sma' hours" after one and all thoroughly enjoying themselves. At a meeting of the Matiere Football Club it was decided to hold a Football Ball, when Mrs A. H. Hyde will present the Mangaroa team the banner for the season just ending. The ball, which is to take place on September l?lh promises to be a huge success.
