WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Waitorr.o County Council was held at Te Kuiti on Monday last. Thc-ru were present: — Councillors Scholes, chairman; Hunt, Hoffman, Loveday, Hyde, Johnston, Were, Gregg and Boddie. —Correspondence.- j Letters were received from Mr Hine, Solicitor, one enclosing an agreement for signature by Mr Lever, and a subsequent letter conveying the information that the District Engineer for Railways had intimaed that the Department had decided to close the level crossing to Mr Lever's property, and take away the gates. —The Chairman said that he and the Engineer had inspected the property, and were of opinion that Mr Lever's application should be granted. The necessary application had been forwarded to the Survey Department for the issue of a Governor's Warrant to have the road surveyed. The information that the Railway Department had closed the crossing took the form of a surprise. Other councillors expressed similar sentiments, and on j the motion of Cr Hunt, seconded by the chairman, it was resolved that the Railway Department be written to expressing surprise that the gates at the level crossing leading to Mr Lever's section should have been removed and fence erected without any reference to the Council, especially as the advisability of opening a road to give access to certain sections was being considered. Road Dedication: A letter was received from Mr Hine asking the Council to approve of the road laid off through the sections opened up by Mr H. Hetet. —Mr Boddie said he would like to have the position of the Council defined in the matter; it was important to know if the Council was forced to accept the dedication of all roads through Native lands. The Council was facei with a difficult position. He moved that a competent legal opinion be obtained on the matter. The motion was seconded by Cr Were and carried. Mr Hine wrote,on behalf of te Anglican Church committee with reference to the drainage ol water from the road to the parsonage.—The Engineer was instructed to attend to the matter. Messrs Watts and Broad foot wrote explaining that their account was for the cost of obtaining certified copies of dedication deeds for the roads; such being necessary to court proceedure in by-law cases.—lt was decided that the amount should be paid on receipt of certified copies. Messrs Watts and Broadfoot wrote requesting the Council's approval to the plan of Waimate road on Mr J. O'Brien's property, Te Kuiti. —On the motion of Cr Boddie, seconded by Cr Hyde, it was decided that the plan be approved when the road is formed to the satisfaction of the Council. In reference to the application of Mr C. Bartley for a road survey to his property the Chairman explained that Mr Wilson, District Road Engineer, was now surveying the road in question. Mr W. Lorigan wrote on behallf of C. J. Sloman, requesting that the road through Hapenui block to Mr Roman's property be taken under the Public Works Act, and that the name of Mr Cheal be substituted for that of Mr Jordan as surveyor. The letter further stated that applicant would only hold himself responsible for the survey.—lt was resolved on the motion of Cr Boddie, Seconded by Cr Were, that Mr Cheal's name be substituted for that of Mr Jordan's and the conditions previously fixed be adhered to. —County Offices.--Mr Hine wrote, offering to builion his section in Sheridan Street, and let the offices as Council Chambers. —Received. —Sanitary Inspection.— Dr Purdy, District Health Officer, wrote requesting the Council to increase its subsidy to the Department from £lO to £2O per annum, and pointing out the necessity of having proper inspection carried out in the various townships of the County.—Consideration of the letter was held over till next meeting. —Auctioneer's License. — The application of W. F. St. George, for an auctioneering license at Te Kuiti was recommended. —Grassing Crown Lands. — A letter was received from the Crown Lands Department with reference! to the grassing of Section 7, Block 4, Mangamangero, statine that a bill for grass seed had been paid and another bill had been received for the same work. —The chairman said there had evidently been a mistake, as the Council had nothing to do with the matter. The Clerk was instructed to write accordingly. —Otorohanga Domain. — A letter was received from Mr C. J. Johnson, on behalf of the Otorohanga Domain Board, requesting a grant for the purpose of improving the Otorohanga Domain. —Cr Gregg i explained that a certain amount was : in hand but the work would be considerably facilitated by a grant. He ■moved that a sum of £lO be granted from the riding fund for the purpose. The motion was seconded by Cr Hoffman and carried. —Turitea Road "Thirds."— Mr F. G. R. Dassler wrote requesting that the "thirds" on Section 1. Block 15, be scheduled and devoted to giving access to his section through a metal reserve. —It was resolved to accede to the requests of Mr Dassler and Mr West, respecting the ''thirds'-' : on Turitea road. —Te Kuiti .School Road. -- j Mr F. H.
