By a recent decision of the Customs Audit Department, exporters of jeweller's gold sweepings arc now called upon to pay the export duty levied on gold under the provisions of "The Gold Duty Act. 1908." This entails upon exporters the necessity of having the sweepings assayed by a local licensed gold assayer before shipment, as otherwise Jhe duty of 2/ an ounce is legally chargeable upon the total weight of the sweepings. The Secretary of the Waikato Winter Show informs us that everything promises to be a monster success, entries showing an increase of from 100 to 500 per cent on entries closed. Applications for space that will tax the capacity of the vast buildings of nearly an acre, and side-shows are phenominal. Our old friend of last year the "Laughing Gallery" will be present, only to be eclipsed by the Katzenjammer Castle. This weird, Haunted Castle, has had marked success in all climes and was running for 21 weeks at the N.Z. Exhibition.
