WAIKATO NOTES.

(Own Correspondent.)

The cycle race held co Empire Day excited» considerable amount of interest, ami the eoorse of 52 miles from Hamilton to Nagrnawabia ami then back and on to Cambridge and back to Hamilton, was covered by the winner, Wi 6. J«nes, in tbe remarkably abort time of 2 hours 55 minutes, eqoal to a little over IT miles on an boor. D. Scott did tbe distance in the actually fastest time of 2 boon* 50 minute ♦, 15 seconds, bat being handicapped he only secured fourth place.

A Ore broke out about half past seven on Tuesday night in the composing room of the Waikato Times building, and rapidly increasing, consoroed practically all the job printing and composing plant, the greater part of the type being destroyed. The machines and engine were saved undamaged, except by water and the greater part of tbe stock was also saved. The iosorances were £940 on the plant and machinery, and £3OO on the building. It fe expected that tbe business will be transferred to the new Waikato Times building further down Victoria Street, at as early date.

1 hear that about three hundred men of the Auckland Mounted Rifles wilt take part in a **trek'*in Waikato at an early date. The men will be away for four or five days and some valuable experience will be gained. They leave on Jene 7 th.

A deadlock has been reached in the matter of the manual training school for Cambridge, owing to the action of the Government in refusing to establish a school of that type at Hamilton, as it bad been intended to work both schools with the same staff. The Education Board does onot feel justified in going oo with the Cambridge school, under the circumstances.

The first meeting of the Waikato Hunt Club at Pirongia was a great success. Afternoon tea was provided at Mr McGovcms and folly 250 persons tamed out for the afternoon, which was delightfully tine. I know that quaint, quiet village of Pirongia. It recalls to mindjjomc of the picturesque English villages I have visited. The country round Pirongia is ideal hunting ground and the success of future meets is folly assured. 1 hear that Mr J. D. Chalmers, of Wafoku, may stand as a candidate for Lower Waikato on the N.Z. Dairy Association's directorate.

Lord Ptnnkct is to be asked to open the Waikato Winter Show in July next.
