DISTRICT REQUIREMENTS.

The following letter has been received by Mr Jennings, member for the ditsrict, from the Secretary of the Auckland Board of Education: — "In answer to your letter dated 10th inst., I am directed to forward you the following information in answer to communcications made to you upon school matters in your Electorate: — Manunui: Letter from Piriaka School Committee enlargement of school. Application was made for a grant for the enlargement of the Manunui school on the 16th December last. On th= 7th January the Board was notified by the Minister that a grant had been authorised for the englargement of the building, and asked whether the Board was willing that the Public Works Department should carry out the /work. The Board agreed to the proposal. The The Public Works Department has not yet commenced the work; but, in a letter dated the 7th inst., the District Engineer reports that the work of enlarging the school will be undertaken within the next few weeks. The Board is in no way responisble for the delay n the matter.

Kaeaea: Letter from Mr F. Elwood —enlargement of school. No application has reached this office for the enlargement of the school building. Application was made to the Minister for a grant for the erection of a porch at the school, and for fencing. This was declined. The Board on the 31st March authorised the Architect to arrange for the erection of a porch and for a portion of the school ground to be fenced. No application has been received from the residents for the -school to be made full time.

Niho Niho: Letter from Mr C. H. Mackinder asking for the reservation of a piece of land for school purposes adjoining Mr Mossman's section at the junction of the Rimu and Waikaka roads. Application has beeh made to the Minister for a grant for the erection of a school building to accommodate 20 to 30 pupils upon the piece of land containing 1 acre 2 roods 5.2 perches, being Section 3, Block ri>l,Ohura S.D., which has been reserved for school purposes. From the description this appears to be the site named in Mr Mackind.er's letter.

Mangapehi: Letter from Mr John Gray, chairman of committee and others. A grant for the erection of a school building was made by the Minister on the 7th August. The site upon which the school is to be built is Native land. The Education Department has agreed take the necessary actio:! under the Public Works At: to place the Boarding possession of me site. The Minister has promised to expedite ■ the matter, but there is a difficulty owing to the fact that tit tic atptar tj be no legalised roads in. the vicinity of - the site. The Purvey Department is being asked to push the matter through as early as possible. .The delay ii; acquiring the site is not exceptional, ov- ; jng to the great difficulty which always ' occurs in the transfer of land owned ] by' Natives. The erection of the build- j ing will be proceeded with immediately j the Board is placed in possession of a t title to the site.
