THE WOOL MARKET.

LONDON, May 5.

The London wool sales opened yesterday, the offerings totalling 7892 bales, including 7000 bales of crossbred. There was a large attendance, a record number of Americans being present, and there was strong general competition. Medium crossbreds realised 10 per cent, above the closing rates at the March sales, and fine and coarse crossbreds 5 per cent, higher. There was a poor selection of merinos, which «>ld at par to •> per cent, higher. Wool is again animated,and merinos arc fully 5 per cent, above tnc March prices. Crossbreds arc strong at yesterday's advance.

WELLINGTON, May 6

A cable from the High Commissioner, dated May 5. states that the wool sales commenced with a strong market. There was a large attendance of buyers, Americans competing keenly for crossbreds, merinos and coarse crossbreds. All grades were a halfpenny, and fine crossbreds of all grades and medium crossbreds of all grades on penny higher than at the last sales. Prospects arc favourable.
