On Monday evening las t a ballast track broke away from the quarry siding above Te Kuiti, and gathering momentum on the down grade dashed at a great pace into the station yard. The goods train was alongside the platform on the main line, and fortunately the driver saw the on-rushing truck in time to get way on his engine and back before the truck. The impact of the collision was thus greatly lessened,and little or no damage was occasioned. Final arrangements in connection with the Oddfellows' social to be held tonight were made at a meeting on Tuesday evening. Everything is in order for a moat enjoyable gathering, and a large attendance of members nad friends is expected. Camille St. Saens' opera "Samson and Delilah," written by the French composer in 1877, wis produced in Covent Garden Theatre last night. The production of the opera in England was previously impossible- the censor having prohibited it, owing to its theme being Biblical. Queen Alexandra secured the withdrawal of tb<censor's prohibition.
