NEW ZEALAND FARMERS' UNION.
Otorohanga Branch. The ordinary monthly meeting of the above branch of the N.Z. Farmers' Union wa3 held on Macrh 26th. The following members were present:— Messrs John Ormsby (chairman), E. G. Matthews, A. J. Ross.C. J. Johnson, H. Mandeno and H. Vv. Quinn (secretary and treasuerr). Mr R. J. Ranby, the vice-chairman, sent an apology for his unavoidable ' absence. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. —Correspondence.— The following correspondence was then dealt with: — Letter from Te Kuiti Branch re taxation on unimproved values; from Mokau-iti branch re excursion to State Farm; from Post-master-General on the question of proposed telephone service at Kio Kio; from the District Traffic Manager cf Railways regarding the passenger service between Otorohanga and Te Awamutu; from the Dominion Secretary of the N.Z. Farmers' Union (Mr A.. J. Jack), re Farmers' Advocate Newspaper and other matters. Several communications from the Provincial Secrtary, Mr G. J. Garland, were also received. —Telephone Service— Mr A. J. Ross proposed that th ; s matter be allowed to stand over until next meeting of the Union, in order to give the settlers at Kio Kio an opportunity of further considering the matter of telephone communication between their stations and post office. Mr Mandeno seconded the motion I which was carried. j Delegates to Provioncial Conference. j This matter was generally discussed, and after due consideration it was decided upon the proposal of R. G. Matthews, seconded by the secretary, that I this Branch refrain from sending a delegate to the Provincial Conference upon this occasion. —Unimproved Values. — This vexed question was gone into fully, all members present entering fully into the whoh of the pros, and cons, of this form of taxation. It was finally resolved that this Branch would take no action in the matter, and en the proposition of the Secretary the letter from Te Kuiti Branch was received. —Goodshed for Kio Kio. — Mr A. J. Ross proposed that the Secretary be instructed to again bring before the notice of the Minister of Railways the urgent necessity of having a new goodshed erected at Kio Kio, and that letters be also sent to Messrs Greenslade and Jennings, M's.P., asking them to co-operate in the endeavour to obtain this concession to tie settlers of Kio Koi. Mr Mandeno seconded the motion which was carried. Mr Ross explained that at present owing to the lack of goodshed accommodation the settlers were pu: to great inconvenience and loss owing to their manures, seeds, and general merchandise having to be out on the platform in all weathers awaiting removal. —Kawhia-Otorohr.i:ga Read.— R. G. Matthews proposed that the Secretary write to the Chief Engineer of Roads of the district drawing attention to the bad state cf that part of this road, btween Honikiwi School and Quins' property, and pointed out that this part required widening like the rest of the road between it and Otorohangn. Also it required culverts and some of the acute angles reduced or cut off. The Chairman seconded the motion, and it was carried unanimously.
- Public Pound at Otorohanga.— This matter was brought up for the first time by the Union, although it has been a question which has exercised the minds of the inhabitants fcr some years past. After the matter had been fully and generally discussed by the members present, it was resolved on the motion of E. G. Matthew?, seconded by the Secretary, that a Public Pound be established at Otorohanga, and that the Secretary communicate with the Chairman of the Waitomo County Council, asking for his co-operation to bring about the desired object. It was further resolved that in the event of said round being established, that a contain number of stock be allowed tu graze the bystreets upon such stock being registered and the owners paying a yearly fee for the privilege. Ail registered grazers to wear a coliar.no stud animals to be so registered -under anjf circumstances, and they, and all unregistered stock to be impoisnde '. by the Ranger. —New Members. — R. G. Matthews proposed Mr William Hudson, of Kio Kio, as a member of this branch of the Union; Mr Mandeno seconded, and Mr Hudson was elected accordingly. The meeting concluded with the usual vote of thanks to the chair. —r- 1
