CIVIL SERVICE CHANGES.
The Civil Service is in a state of turmoil over the drastic system of reorganisation and retrenchment wnich iti s said the Government has in contemplation says the Wellington correspondent of the "Star." In view of the fact that the Prime Minister is expected to be very communicative on this reorganisation subject when delivering his policy speech shortly, his colleagues are close as oysters, and absolutely refuse to give the least inkling as to Cabinet's intentions. Variuos rumours are afloat as to what scheme has been endorsed by Ministers but it is quite impossible to say at this juncture how near they are to I have an impression, however, based upon what I have gleaned in several quarters, that tha pruning knife will be applied very vigorously indeed to the Tourist, Defence, and Health Departments, and that in connection with the latter branch of the service the retirement of Dr Mason, Chief Health Officer of the Dominion, may be looked for at an early date. Some time ago it was stated that the Tourist Department would be amalgamated with the Railway Department, but it is now believed that this arrangement has been knocked on the head, and that there will be a fusion of the Tourist and Agricultural Departments under the Ministerial supervision of the Hon. T. Mackenzie. Report gave out two or three weeks ago that Mr Ritchie, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, would assume the duties of Land Purchase Inspector, vice Mr Barron, j retired; but latest gossip credits the j Government with the intention of re- j taining Mr Ritchie in his present posi- ; tion.
