DEFENCE NOTES.

--♦ - - The Te Akau Troop of the Raglan Mounted Rifles paraded for inspection at the old homestead, Te Akau, on Saturday. March 6th. There was an rxeellcnt muster of the troop, 28 of all ranks being present. In the absence of Lieut. Surges*, I.ieut. Nicholson took command. After the troop bad been inspected by Colonel Bell, they were taken In hand by Staff Instructor SergU-Major Coleman, and instructed in skirmishing. The Board of Inquiry set up to inquire into the injury sustained by Corporal Sutherland's horse while parading —which adjourned its sitting in order to get a report from a veterinary surgeon—will be resumed sometime during the present week. Colonel Bell and Scrgt.-Major Coleman proceed to Putaruru on Friday next to inspect lb.* men who have made application to form a new mounted squadron in that district. The competition for the cup, pre- : scnted to the Piako Mounted Rifles by I Mr J. B. Starkey, will take place at the Starkey homestead on Saturday I next.

Major W. R. C. Walker, has handed over the command of .the "D" Squadron. Cambridge, to Lieut Hay, Major Walker having been promoted to the Regimental Staff as second in command.

A "Staff ride" took olace over the ground to be operated over during the Easter Manoeuvres on Saturday last. Colonel Walker being umpire, assisted by several members of the district staff.
