iOwn Correspondent^ At Aria on Thursday 4th inat. avery enjoyable social was held the occasion being the opening of Messrs J. Reardon and Sons' new spacious store. A public invitation was issued to which 4s the settlers responded in targe numbers fully thirty couples gracing the floor, which was in capital order, and numerous spectators occupied the seating accommodation. During the evening a musical programme was gone through alt the items being vociferously received. Mis? Stirling sang. "Wilt you love me in December/* and gave as an encore, "If you only Knew." Mrs S. Riddle, "Killamey." encored: Mr L. Smith/'Mama's Boy." encored: Miss Stirling and Mr L. Smith also renderd two duets, "Sing me to Steep," "and "Angeline," both of which were encored. Mr Gorman also found favour for his singing of "Davey Jones' Locker. " Mr L. Smith provoked the risible faculties of the audience with "Stop Ycr* Tickling Jock." and in response to an encore, gave "The Hobnailed Boots/' and was again recalled. The accompaniments were played by Mr and Mrs L. Smith. Dancing was kept going well into th<» smalt hours of , the morning, excellent music beings»up- j plied by Mr Smith, Mr Northern!t, and j extras by Mrs Thomas. The piano j was kindly tent by Mr and Mrs Thomas j of Kaeaea. and greatly added to the evening's enjoyment. Mr Matene ably ; officiated as M.C.. and kept things ! moving merrily. Everyone present j expressed themselves as having thor- ; oughty enjoyed the evening. i ■*" With the advent of a public halt at ; no very distant date the settlers ar« | looking forward to many pleasant so- j ciata, such as was held tast Thursday ' evening.
On Thursday evening Man;h 4tb. a general meeting of settlers was held for the purpose of discussing ways and means of erecting » Public Kail in the township. The want of a halt in the district has long been fett. and the meeting was unanimous in its desire to assist the movement. The amount of JE7O towards *he building has already been guaranteed, and a freehold section has been secured, i* order to further swell the building fund a dance is to be held on Friday evening next and judging by the interest evinced in the project there is little doubt of a bumper hotne and a most enjoyable time.
