Thj district has suffered a loss in the departure of Mr S. T. Smerdon, who has been schoolteacher for about two year*. While regretting hi* departure the whole of the settlers are pleased that hi* removal will be for hi* betterment, as he ha* been successful in winning a scholarship, and for a period of 12 month* he will be studying at the Auckland Training College. We wish him every success in hi* studies.
The new teacher arrived in the district Inst Wirk, and has taken up his duties.
The spell of dry weather ha* had a marked effect on the gras*. and the long looked for rain, which fell on Saturday morning, wilt prove of benefit to the district.
Mr and Mr* Evan* are preparing for a trip to the Old Country, and arc expected to leave during the course of a wrek or w.
During the absence of Mr Evan*, bis partner, who is bring marri/*d on Saturday. March 2»»th, at New Plymouth, will manage the farm.
The prospects of an improved road during the coming winter are in view, as metalling is bcirg pushed on. and the worst portion of the mn>in road is nearly completed. The prospects of a dairy factory are exceptionally bright and the settlers are prepared to give every encouragement to make the co-operation a sucress.
A meeting of settler.* was held at I'aemako on Saturday last to distuss mattres in connection with the proposed dairy* factory. Mr O'Dwycr was in the chair, and there was an excellent attendance of settlers from the surrounding districts. It was decided to start a co-oprative dairy factory at Piopio. and over 250 cows were guaranteed in the room. It is proposed ot receive milk and cream at the factory, as it is recognised in cases where settlers arc some distance from the factory the carting of the milk would be a heavy item. Canavssers were appointed for each district and the results of the canvas arc to be reported to a to be held on March 2«th at Miroahuiao. A representative from Mason. Struthcs & Co..
is to be present at the meeting and will furnish information on various matters in connection with the proposed factory.
