FIRE AT TAIHAPE.
! A destructive fro co ourred at TaiI hapc on Monday evening last, a block j of buildings in Main street and Station j Streetbeing totally destroyed. Fifteen j business premises were gutted. j The first start-d in. Waier's boot j shop, and spread rapidly. Fortunately the night was calm. The buildings destroyed included the following:— McPherson, tailor. Nichol, jeweller. | Finch, stationer. i Labour Department. I J. P. A'.dridge. insurance agent. j Hautapu Tea Rooms. I Witcomb, dentist. i Wong Kee, fruiterer. | Jones, painter. j Hodgson, plumber. | Garner, seed merchant. j Jones, painter.
Ellis and Darville. Not a stick of timber has been left. The police sergeant's residence and shops opposite were saved after strenuous exertions. The crowd worked willingly. The fire brigade was fust proceeding by train to Auckland f-:r "he demonstration, but re-rain::;:: behind. Its services were of litre use. no water being available.
