Riots in Portugal A Republican carnival in Lisbon on February 27th led to wild demonstrations against the Monarchy, resulting in rioting, and 200 arrests were made, while many persons were wounded. The masoncraders gave a mockery of last years* tragedy, when King Carlos and his eldest son were killed. The Royal victims and their assassins were impersonated, and the obsequies were simulated by means of coffin containing skeletons. Blasphemous songs were meanwhile sung by the revellers. The police interfered and were stoned by those taking part in the demonstration, while the m«t> joined forces with them, and showers of stones and other missiles were hurled at the police. Eventually the military were called out. and the disturbance was quelled, but not until a great number of the rioters had been wounded.
United States Navy Congess has eliminated an amendment requiring President Roosevelt to divide th«* navy between the Atlantie and the Pacific. Mr Roosevelt strongly opposed the amendment, because the Russian ami Japanese experiences had shown that division meant weakness.
