TE KUITI TOWN IMPROVEMENTS.
New Contracts Let. In connection with the scheme of .improvements for Te Kuiti, several new contracts have been let by the Waitomo County Council, and the various works will be continued with every despatch. The major portion of the work in the centre of the town has now been completed, with the exception of metalling Rora Street, and the tender of Mr W. Lovett has now been accepted for this work, the price being £279 12s 6d for the supply, carting and speading of the metal from the Awakino Road corner to the new railway crossing. Originally it was intended to metal only as far as King Street, but in view of the fact that considerable traffic will ensue as far as the crossing, it was deemed advisable to undertake the extra work. A contract for the formation of Hill Street has been let to Mr McColl for £3l 10s.
With regard to the small stream which traverses King Street West, and run 3 under the railway and crosses Taupiri Street near the Congregational Church, it has been decided -to make culverts and banks in King Street and Taupiri Street. Material for the fill-, ing is to be obtained from the hill on Carroll Street, which is to be cut down eighteen feet at a width of fourteen feet. The tender of Mr Mahood for \ this work, except the culverting, has been accepted, the price being £V43 3s 4d. The culvert; are to be put in by \ day work.
With the completion of the works mentioned, together with the contracts now in hand, the town will bear a very different appearance. It may be stated that the contracts accepted in each case came very close to the Engineer's estimate.
