(Own Correspondent) At last the spirit of pregresa seem# to iMn taiaed on the young men «f this district, and a Cricket Club with m membership of about 2d) has been in existence here for the past three weeks. Though working under difficulties, owing to the rough state el the ground in the neighbourhood, a very fair pitch baa been formed, upon which the memtar* pnctki very evening. A»energetic Committee, comprising Messrs Reeton, Walsh. Mayne. McCrackfn. Swattbone, W. Young (Secretary), and B. W. Bay son (Treasurer), 'has been elected. Mr A. McCracken was unanimously elected captain. wbrie Mr P. Walsh was made vice captain. Aft the members seem to take a keen in* terest in the game, and with careful practice the Club should be abte to pot forward a very good team. On Sunday afternoon last, the tram selected to play Manunui played a practice match agairst an eleven picked ftom allcomers. The local school children's picnic «H held In Mr Wchi's paddock on Saturday last, under the most favourabk avipices, the day being gloriously Am. A large marquee was erected to gWe shatter to the parents from the bluing sun. Under tnis the table was spread for lunch and tea, and a fa«r display of childish healthy appetites, merry, laughter and beaming faces, it would have been bard to find. A large number of the parents were present, both front Po*o-©-tarao and Mangapehi. The afternoon was taken 19 with sports for the children, who enjoyed the fun immensely. Two items worthy of mention are the high jump, which was won easily by Master Alee, gtawart, a 12 year old boy, who afterwards cleared 4ft. Bin. The girl's skipping competition was won easily by Miss Ida Harrison, who skipped up to 630 and then retired voluntarily, being tired oat. During the afternoon an exhibition of maypole dancing was given on the green by 12 of the school giftft, and was well applauded by the apeetstonk At tcatime. Mr John Gray, Quitman of the School Committee, presented to the children the prizes won at the sports during the day. The W mf night, a dance for the children waa held in the Public Hall until 10 o'clock, after which time the adults had their turn. The music was very kindly supplied by Mrs C. Harris. Early in the evening. Mr Gray pretented the book prises won by the children at the examinatoin at the of last year.
