Strike in Melbourne - Two hundred and fifty members of the Victorian Ironworkers and Boilermakers Assistant's Society have struck for higher wages. Australian DefenceThe Federal Government has decided to at once order two torpedo destroyers of the river class, and of the latest approved type. They are wanted to serve as models for boats to be built afterwards in Australia. It is the intention of the Government to send to England for skilled operatives, to be employed by the successful tenderer for the const ruction of the vessels. On the completion of the contract the men are to return, and be' employed in building additional vessels locally. Replying at the Canada Club dinner on February 4th, to the toast of the Imperial forces. Major J. C. Hoad, Commonwealth Commandent. alluded to the benefits from the inauguration of the Imperial General Staff. Major Hoad emphasised the interest of AusAustralians in military matters, and said they realised that if Australia had to be defended it would have to be almost entirely by citizen soldiers. Britain's Navy - It is stated in Navy League circles that the Admiralty has asked Cabinet to authorise the laying of the keels of six Dreadnoughts during the coming year. Restricting AliensThe Californian House of Representatives has, by 48 votes to 28, rejected the bill which forbade all aliens to own land. The vote is considered as fore-shadowing the defeat of all measures tending to embarass the Federal Government. British Pension Scheme — Mr Charles E. H. Hobhouse, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, states that nine millions must be found in order to carry out the English old age pensions scheme. Foreign Paupers— Mr J. F. Deacon, presiding at the annual meeting of the Society for Befriending Foreigners in Distress, complained bitterly that the Aliens Act was inoperative. Pauper immigrants were being admitted into the country without restriction, with the result that they soon bad to appeal to this society for repatriation. Boxing Championship—"Bill" Lang beat "Bill" Squires for the Heavyweight championship of Australia, in the 17th round. Co-operative Farming— Raleigh's co - operative farming scheme, carried out in Essex, yielded the labourers a return of 4 per cent, on their investments. British Politics— The Daily Chronicle admits that sharp differences of opinion in the Cabinet have developed at recent meetings with respect to the Naval Estimates. The Admiralty propose an immediate addition of £2,600,000, increasing to £5,000,000 and £6,000,000 in succeeding years. Mr Lloyd-George, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Lord Morley, Secretary for India, and Mr I Winston Churchill, President of the Board of Trade, are opposing the , scheme, while Mr R. McKenna, First ! Lord of the Admiralty, and Mr T. J. : MacNamara, Parliamentary and Finan- : cail Secretary to the Admiralty, though [ previously rigid economists, are strong:'iy supporting it. There arc rumours of possible resignations. Britain's Defence — The extraordinary vogue of the play "An Englishman's Home," dealing with England's unpreparednesa for war, is increasing.
