On receiving the news that Mr Wm. Cowley was to he removed to take charge of the Manunui Timber Mill. khe local residenks took the matter enthusiastically in band, and prepared a most brilliant farewell to the departing manager and his wife and daughter. A public meeting, which was largely* attended, was first called to decide as to what form tbe presentation should take. Ik was determined that subscriptions should be token up. and a substantial present given to each member of kbe family. On Friday night a moat successful farewell social was tendered to tbe out-going manager and his wife. The Hall was crowded, and dancing was tometimes, in eonseqtM-nce, j a bit difficult, but this did not prevent the dancers from keeping up the *fun until 3 a.m. The interior of the Malt looked splendid, being decorated entirely with flags. During khe evening, Mr John Gray, on behalf of the Fare well Committee, made the presentations. Mr Cowley received a beaoti- ' ful Illuminated address, in which was expressed the esteem in which Mr Cowley was held by both his employers and employees. He was also handed a ten-guinea gold watch and a goldmoonted watch-guard, as a further token of esteem. The present to Mr and Mrs Cowh»y conjointly, consistel \ of a beautiful ken-guinea silver tea ; and coffee service. Miss Clara Cowley ! received a very handsome gold brooch valued at about two guineas. Tbe presentations were followed by long ! and continued applause from alfrresent. In a few well-chosen words. Mr Cowley expressed his appreciation of tbe kindness that bad been shown to him and bis on that evening. He trusted that they should alt.be enabled to meet again many times in the future. Tbe ! evening concluded by all joining hands and singing "Aold Lang Syne." On Sunday evening Mr and Mrs Cowley entertained about SO of the men of Mangapehi at dinner.
