BEYOND THE DOMINION.
o Boxing Contests — The New South Wales Cabinet has decided to legislate next session for the control of all boxing contests. Stringent restrictions are to be applied meantime. The restrictions of boxing by the Government provides that the gloves used must not be under six cunces, and that no infighting is to be allowed. Messina Earthquake — Further earthquake shocks, which were experienced at Messina on Jan. 18, brought down many tottering buildings. The ruins are to be cleared away by throwing them into the sea, and a Government Commissoin is now deliberating upon the best means of accomplishing this. It is expected that the prospect of work will attract numbers of refugees back to the town. Search is proccding under the ruins of the military depots for enormous supplies of cereals and flour which were stored there. American bluejackets recovered the bodies of the United States Consul at Messina, Mr Cheney, and his wife from the ruins of their home. The Mansion House fund now totals £105,000. Broken Hill Strike — The hearing of the charges against Tom Mann and 27 others of causing last week's riot was commenced at Broken Hill on Tuesday. Before being admitted to bail, Mann had to give an undertaking not to participate in processions, address meetings, or in any way concern himself with the dispute till after next Wednesday week. Sculling Championship — Ernest Barry, the English sculling champion, in a letter to the Sportsman, regrets that circumstances will not permit of the acceptance of Arnst's offer for a match either in Australia or New Zealand. Barry says, however, that he is willing to row Arnst on the Thames, from Putney to Mortlake, early in July, for £SOO aside, and to allow Arnst £IOO for expenses. Harry Thaw — An application to the New York Courts to grant a new trial for the determination of the question of the sanity of Harry Thaw, the murderer of Stanford White, the New York architect, has been granted. The examination will be held by a judge alone, the application for a jury having failed.
