WAIRERE CARNIVAL.

New Year's Day has been set apart out back as belonging to Wairere Carnival, and in choosing that day for the function the Committee had every reason to anticipate that no difficulty would be experienced in the matter of weather. Strange to say, however, a day's postponement in consequence of bad weather had to be recorded in connection with the first Carnival, and again this year the weather conditoins were anything but favourable right up to the day. Indeed, a postponement was actually announced on the day before the but this was subsequently reconsidered and the, Carnival duly eventuated on the day originally fixed. There was an excellent crowd at the fete and the fine stretch on the Mokau river above ' Wairere bridge was generally admired, while a considerable number of visitors took the opportunity of viewing the beautiful Wairere Falls. The programme of events included foot races, canoe and swimming events, together with highly diverting competition i in the shape of the greasy boom, horse swimrfling and tub races. The booths were run by the Committee, and the departure proved a welcome change . from the previous year. Altogether the function passed off well, though the committee was seriously handicapped in the matter of weather, and also in other respects.
