DISTRICT REQUIREMENTS.

Mr Jennings Interviewed. Mr W. T. Jennings, member for the disrict arrived at Te Kutii early on Tuesday morning, having come through from Auckland by the night express. On Tuesday afternoon an influential deputation waited upon the member, at Mr F. H. Sims' boarding fcouse, with reference to various matters of interest to the district

Mr Jer. Ormsby, Chairman of the Waitomo County Council, drew attention to the main street through the town and requested that the Government be urged to metal the street. Mr ®rmsby pointed out that it was main thoroughfare between Auckland and Taranaki, and had been metalled right up to the township boundary by the Government.

The question of the Native Tow|T Board which is proposed to be instit- v

uted by the Government, waß also mentioned, and it was pointed out to Mr Jennings that such a board was not wanted or asked for'by the people. The state of the liquor laws as ap plied to the King.Country, was strongly referred to and the member was requested to urge that the present arbitrary restrictions be removed and the district placed on the same footing as other no-licenae areas in the Dominion. The un-British law which throws .the onus of proving his innocence of sly grog selling on a person bringing liquor into the district, was pointed out, and recent cases against settlers were referred to>

The assistance of the member was also asked for in the opening up of lands purchased on the east side of Te Kuiti.

In reply, Mr Jennings stjid the various matters would have his support, and he trusted some good results would accrue in consequence. Referring to the licensing law the member said there was undoubtedly every reason why similar privileges with other districts should be claimed, and no effort should be spared in advancing those claims.
