DUNEDIN WOOL SALE.

The first of the series of the Dunedin wool sales was held on Thursday. The total offerings were 8821 bales, as aginst 4688 at the opening sale last year, the increase, no doubt being accounted for by the fine weather during the last few weeks, and also by the fact that the prices ruling at the north sales were much in advance of what was expected earlier in the season. There was a large attendance of buyers, representing British, Continental, and American centres, as well as local buyers. The quality of the clip for the most part was equal to that of last year, but some of the Central Otago wool gave evidence of the severe winter. The most noticeable feature was the comparatively high prices paid by the Bradford buyers for sound crossbred hogget wool of good length. Continental buyers were strong competitors for medium halfbred, in many cases outbidding the local mills, who usually take the bulk of these lots. Prices ruled as follows : —Super halfbred, 10£ d to Is; medium to good, 8d tolOd; inferior, 6|d to 7d. Super crossbreds, lOd to 12Jd; good do., 7fd to 9£d; medium do., 6§d to 7|d. Super merinos, 12d; medium to good, BJd to lOJd; inferior, 7d to 7|d. Pieces, bellies, and locks, sold at a reduction of Id to IJd per lb.
