There appears to be some doubt entertained by a number of people as to the powers of a Native Town Council in the matter of borrowing. Judge Browne, President of the Maori Land Board, on being asked as to his view of the position said he was of opinion the Council had exactly the same borrowing powers, under the Local Bodies Loans Act, as a Borough Council. Mr H. A. Ellison notifies in this issue that he is cutting up his "Bonnie Glen Estate," and at an early date will offer for sale, sections of from one to seven acres. The Taylor-Carrington Picture Company gave another of their entertainments in the Town Hall, Te Kuiti, last evening and were greeted with a fair audience. The pictures were certainly the best that have been exhibited here, and when the Company pay a return visit, we are sure they will be well patronised. At Waitara on Wednesday, a case of considerable interest to Te Kuiti residents was heard, when F. R. Waters was charged with a breach of the Electoral Act. It will be remembered that some forty electors were disfranchised in consequence of the Registrar of Electors holding that Mr Waters was not qualified to witness the signatures of applicants for enrolment. Mr Waters held firmly to the opinion that the Registrar had blundered and this was borne out by the result of the court case, the charge being dismissed. Mr Hine appeared for the defence. Tomorrow, (Friday) the annual distribution of prizes will take place at . the Te Kuiti School, During the after ] noon the children and their parents ! and friends will be entertained to after- ! noon tea, and games and races will be provided for the children, while each child will also draw a prize from the Christmas tree.
