MAROKOPA-KIRITEHERE.

(Own Correspondent.) At a meeting held at Marokopa on the 28th November, a programme was drawn up for sports to be held at Marokopa on the Ist and 2nd of January, 1909. The sports include chopping, running, wrestling, boat races, horse races, obstacle race, horse steeplechase, rough riding, and children,s races during intervals. About £29 is to be given in prizes, the Marokopa and Kiritehere people meaning to have a good time. Mrs Can- has arrived at Marokopa, where she intends to open a boarding house, for which busines there is a good opening. There seems no sign of the Government starting to erect the Kawhia to Marokopa telephone line, although it was understood this line was to be started some two months ago.

Satisfactory progress is being made with the erection of the Marokopa hall. Our school attendance is steadily going up, having risen from eleven to twenty children during the last three months.

On the last trip of the Rothesay, she took 68 bales of wool, being the first shipment fo the season; Mr J. Wouldes was the shipper. Our wool is steadily increasing in supply. Mr Rose sent out three bales, two years ago, this representing the output of the district. Last year the output rose to between twenty and thirty bales, while this year over forty bales will leave the district, and next year this will probably be doubled. It is proved that this district can produce butter of first quality, owing to our moist climate, and rich growth of pasture, which will enable butter to be made in large quantities. While ©n this subject I may state that there js a likelihood of cream being packed to Te Maika next season. Considerable surprise and annoyance was caused when it became known that a polling booth had not been granted for Marokopa Heads, as 33 votes were polled here last election, and over 50 would have been polled this election if a booth had been on the ground.
