PIOPIO.

(Own Correspondent). A well attended meeting of the settlers was held at Mr Johnston's residence on Saturday evening, to arrange details in connection with the forthcoming Settlers' Picnic. Excellent support has been received from the Te Kuiti business people, and it was decided to have programmes printed, showing the prizes donated by each. The prizes are really well chosen and highly suitable for the purpose. Everything is now in train for the function, which promises to be the most successful yet held in the district. It was arranged that the members of the committee should meet on Thursday morning, the 24th inst. in order to prepare the ground and complete all arrangements necessary.

A depuation of settlers waited on Inspector Crowe of the Education Board on Friday last, with reference to the application for a school for the district. The Inspector said he was in favour of recommending that an aided school be established as soon as possible. A meeting of settlers is to be held on Saturday evening next to further consider the question.

The main road is not in as good a state as was expected after such a spell of dry weather. The question of roads will form a subject of warm discussion at a meeting to be held on Saturday evening.

The metalling near the fourteen mile peg is proceeding slowly, and here will not be much accomplished unless greater activity is shown. However, it is said there are going to be nine drays put on this weak, and with such a number, it will take a very short time to make a good show.
