KAWHIA COUNTY COUNCIL.
Election Petitioned Against
A peculiar position has arisen in connection with the recent Kawhia County Election. Owing to the nomination paper of one candidate being invalid, and that of another arriving too late at the County Office, two of the ridings which were to have been contested were won without a struggle. Legal opinion was taken on the matter with the result that a petition has been lodged with the Clerk of the Court at Kawhia, praying to have the election declared null and void. Among the reasons assigned the chief may be cited as follow: - That the advertised notice relative to the receiving nominations was irregular. That the place where nominations were to be lodged was not notified. That the roll had been tampered with. That the roll had not been corrected by the Magistrate.
That C. F. E. Barton had not been elected Returning Officer. The petition must be heard at Kawhia by the Stipendiary Masgitrate within 14 days of when it was lodged. It is understood both sides will engage Counsel.
