OHURA VALLEY.
(Own Correspondent.)
Good progress is being made by Mr Gould, in charge of Southern Ohura, with the new programme of road widening, parties of men having started on the Toroto, Waikaka, and Waitewhena roads widening to 14 feet. All sips on the main road have been cleared, and all bad places repaired for summer traffic. It is intended to have a mile of roadway metalled, adjoining Mangaroa township, and the worst places between Matiere and Ongarue are to be similarly treated.
Considerable dissatisfaction is entertained by settlers, who have applied to convert their Leaseholds to Freehold, on being informed that it was the opinion of the Crown Lands officer that the Act did not provide for the con verting of these particular sections to freehold. The Minister of Lands on being applied to, stated that if there was any flaw in the Act, the Government would take steps to remedy the fault, so as to allow the intention of the Legislature to be carried out to enable tenants to convert to freehold. A case of considerable importance the suppliers of the dairy factories called in the Taumarunui court, when T. C. Blach, proprietor of the Qhura Dairy Factory, sued W. J. Coventry for £l2, being penalty for failing to supply the milk of 12 cows for season 1908-09. On the.application of plaintiff 's solicitor the case was adjourned to the Sth December, plaintiff to pay all expenses.
