TE KUITI BOWLING GREEN.

Road Reserve Obtained.

At the meeting of the Waitomo County Council held on Mondday last,, a deputation consisting of Messrt Bod-' die, Forsyth, and Fortescue waited the Council with an application ttt purchase an unused portion of a road reserve close to the river, opposite the school. It was pointed out that the reserve would never be required for road purposes, and it was impossible to obtain a suitable piece of land in th« township. The purchase of the ground was in the interests of the public, has the game was largely patronised and a suitable green was a great attraction to any town. During the ensuing discussion the Chairman said that no doubt all were in sympathy with the object of the deputation. If the Council was not prepared to grant the freehold they would probably give a lease of the reserve at a nominal rental. It was pointed out that a large expenditire was projected in order,to make the green suitable, and the Club would probably wish to finance on the property. Cr N. I. Hunt strongly supported the granting of the freehold. Te Kuiti was in the unfortunate position of not having any reserves for public purposes and the Council having control of these unused road reserves should encourage and assist public recreation in every way. The mattrer in question was to All intents a public one and they were in duty bound to study the best interests of the public in every respect,. Cr Scholes said the application was on similar lines to one from Mr Porter, and which the Council had decided not to grant. If one was considered favourably, the other deserved the same treatment.

Cr T. Hunt said in order to test the feeling of the Council he would propose that the freehold of the land be granted to the Bowling Club for the purpose indicated, at a valuation. Cr Ormsby seconded the motion, and said he felt that the green would be for the public benefit. In transferring the ground it should be made itwagjffl The motion, on being put, was carried by a substantial majority.
