KIRITEHERE - MARAKOPA.

(Own Correspondent.) On Saturday, the 3rd inst.; a meeting was held to consider the advisability of joining the Kawhia County. ►-The meeting was poorly attended, Mr -Gregg being in the chair. After a good deal of discussion it was finally decided not to join the County at present. Grass is looking well, and a considerablejiumber of sheep have been brought into'the district during the last week or two. Some difficulty was experienced in getting them in owing to the muddy state of the roads, which shows the necessity of united effort on the part of the settlers to get a main trunk road from Marakopa to Hangatiki; also from Pomarangi to Te Kuiti. Land hunters have been in the district during the past week and have made some very fair offers for proper- j ties. I have not heard of any sale tak- \ ing place. j : A start has been made to widen the j Waipawa road, and several gangs have j started work. Work on the Kiritehere and Marakopa Valley roads is to start shortly. The Te "Kuiti-Kiritehere-Marakopa mail service is not giving satisfaction, it being run on the free and easy, open to the wide world sort of style. It is about time this state of affairs was brought to a close being bad taste, be- ! sides causing a feeling of want of confidence as to the safety of one's letters. We want the mail bags properly sealed and stamped; also the letters, papers £and parcels properly entered on the "letter bills. | ' £)n Friday, the 9th inst., Miss Rosie 'Willison gave a birthday party. A good number of people turned out to it. and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Dancing was kept up till three o'clock next morning, when all dispersed having thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment. We have had Mr Calvin and Mr T. Scott in the district recently, when Eome fairly good lines cf cattle were purchased for the Waikato market.
