Messrs Vicary, Otorohanga, Boddie and Steel, Te Kuiti, members of the Townships deputation to Wellington, returned from the Empire city on Thursday morning. Major Lusk, who ; accompanied the deputation remained in Wellington for an extra day in order to attend to the various County matters.
In connection with the reputation of the Native Minister for for "Taihoa" the much talked of phase of the honourable gentleman's character was certainly not in evidence with regard to his treatmenfof the Townships deputation at Wellington on Monday last. In dealing with the subject he said he was anxious to help the townships and in the matter of finance referred the deputation to the Premier, who would be able to deal directly with fhat phase of the question. The interview ended just at luncheon time.. About an hour later Mr Carroll met some of the party in the street and informed them he had already placed the matter before the Premier and had arranged the interview for the deputation.
The running of a late train from Ohaupo to the King Country on Tuesdays formed one of requests of the King Country deputation at Wellington. The matter was brought before Mr Jennings and Mr Greenslade, the members for the districts interested, who undertook to arrange an interview between Major Lusk and the Minister for Railways.
In the course of the debate on the Public Works Statement Mr Jennings said he lyad received thirty telegrams declaring that if the Government did not carry out its promise of ten yearß ago to construct the Stratford-Ongarue rrailway, it would be guilty of a gross breach of faith. If there was going to be any change of policy in regard to that line, it should only be done with adequate reason, because settlers had gone into the backblocks and setled the land, erected dairy factories and sawmill 3 believing the line was coming to them somo time. The Rev. T. Wilson Potts, who is to arrive here next week will preach for the first time in Te Kuiti on Sunday week. At a meeting of the congregational Church Committee on Tuesday last ,it was decided to tender the Rev. gentleman a welcome social in the Church on Oct. 14th.
With regard to the report which appeared in the Herald in connection with the townships deputation to the Native Minister, it is made to appear that the Minister in referring to the question of tenure said that where a person had a lease there was little hardship in not being able to obtain the freehold. The statement in question did not refer to township sections, but was in reply to a request by Major Lusk to facilitate the obtaining of freehold of rural lands. The Minister meant to convey the idea that when a man already had a lease of a property there was no hardships In having to wait for a time to obtain the freehold.
As will be seen by an advertisement in this issue a public meeting is called for to-night, Friday, for the purpose of receiving the report of the delegates on the Townships deputation to Wellington.
