ROAD CONTRACTS.
In connection with the expending of road grants by the District Roads Department, there has for long been the knowledge that under the system in vogue it is impossible for the Department officials to work to the best advantages. The regulation which limits the amount of a contract to £25 for each man is a manifest drawback to getting substantial work accomplished in anything like a profitable manner. With the object of getting the limit extended, in view of the amount of work which requires to be undertaken in the district Mr Boddie made representations to the Premier during his recent visit to the King Country. The matter was referred to the Minister in charge of the Roads and Bridges, and it is understood -an alteration in the desired direction is to be effected. Major Lusk again referred to the subject in an interview with Sir Joseph Ward on Monday last, and received the reply that the Minister in Charge of the Department had the matter in hand. The giving an extension of power, both in respect to ordinary road works and metalling contracts, would, on the face of it, have a highly beneficial Considering that a greatly increased expenditure is to take place in the district during the present year it is to be hoped in the interests of economy the matter will be satisfactorily adjusted without delay.
