MANGAPEHI.

— o (Own Correspondent.) A veiy successful social in ccnnec-v-tre en the floor, and. v.ith Iv:r S. Martin asM.C, a most enjoyable evening's dancing was gone through. Tne rcusic was supplied by Mrs Milard and Messrs Hcgg i-r.a Kernel, and as usual war- much appprcciatcd. During the evening Mr Kayscn, on behalf of the past members of the Boxing Club., pre-

sented their instructor, Mr E. Wade, with a handsome silver-mounted pipe. In making'the presentation Mr Hsyson referred to the geneoriis manner in which Mr Wade had acted towards the Club ever since its' inauguration. This gentleman had come down night after night and instructed the members in the art of self-defence to the best of his ability, and without the slightest remuneration. " .Those, members now ■wished to.show: their appreciation of his efforts by making hinvthis present. In a few well chosen -words Mr Wade thanked the donors and; stated that as he always took'a great'interest in boxing it had been a pleasure to help the Club along. • .':; '■,'; Now that the Club is closed down Mr Wade is conducting a series ef boxing lessons on. his own account. Much rain has fallen in. this district laiely, and the low lying ground is thoroughly sodden. The reads, or rather the places where the roads ought to be, are simply quagmires. That we are to have a decent read right through is. evidenced by the fact' that the timber for a heavy traffic •'bridge over the Mangapeina stream has been cut locally, and is now lying in readiness for construction.

The timber and bricks are now on the ground for the two new Government houses, and it is expected that the work of construction will be gone on with almost immediately. They should add largely to the appearance of the town t though I fear their new coats of paint will father show up the impainted state of the majority of .buildings here. Messrs Ellis andßurnand's new local timber mill is now completed, and in working order. The machinery was given a trial spin the other day, and was found to run smoothly. The mill is designed for cutting up the smaller legs, and contains twin-saws for breaking down, and a breast bench. An elaborate system of creepers collects all the sawdust, and shoots it into a Waiting, truck. A powerful winch, for bringing the logs up to their place at the "twins" completes the outfit. '.
