PUBLIC WORKS STATEMENT.
The Public Works Statement wa<j presented to the House by the Hon. Hall Jones, on Tuesday night. Of tho many matters dealt with those chiefly afl'ecting the King Country are naturally the votes for backblock roads, for which the sum of £250,000 was upecially set. apart ' by- the Government. Many of the Rohe Potae roads comn under the heading referred to. North of Te Kuiti the amount voted reaches the sum of £24,650 while to the South the sum of £24,146 has been allocated. At tho Wanganui end the sum of £80,680 has been allocated. In addition the district has the ordinary votes under the ordinary roads and bridges heading, the amount totalling to the North of Te Kuiti, £24,019 and to the south £19,441, while the Wanganui portion of the Rohe Potae receives £.15,144. The amounts to open up Crown Lands are as follows:—North * of Te Kuiti, £4781; South of Te Kuiti, £2882; Wanganui end, £8659. Compared with last years-votes for the district the position is eminently satisfactory, as under the ordinary votes for roads and bridges the amount allocated is about the same as last year while the amounts appearing under the head of back block roads are in addition; thus in Te Kuiti road distrißt the extra vote amounts to nearly £29, 000. Of the roads and brides vote it i 3 imposssible to say how much of the amount remains unexpended, but the vote for back block roads being a new departure, the whole of these amounts will be available. It is gratifying to note that the Premier, in reply to Mr Jennings, states that all authorities would be issued District Engineers directly they were applied for. In addition to the road votes there is a considerable amount allocated for public buildings in the district including £2500 for an accommodation house at Waitomo, £I7OO for public buildings in Te Kuiti, £950 for post office and site at Te Kuiti, £7OO for a po3t office at Taumaranui, and £SX)O for a courthouse at Taumarunui. —Roads and Brid3ge Votes.— Kihikihi to Otorohanga, £100; KihikihitoWaotu, £250; Kiokio, £100; Mangaorino, .£250; to Kawa £300; Pirongia to Kawhia, £1000; Pi-fl rongia West, £450; Punui bridge, TeM Awamutu-Otorohanga road, £600; Rohe™ Potae tracks, £100; Te Awamutu to Kihikihi, £400; Te Kuiti to Otorohanga, £300; Temaika to Marakopa, £250; Tumutumu to Waitomo, £150; Waiharakeke bridge, on account, £500; Waipa river bridge, Te Kuiti Otorohanga road, £1150; Waitomo Valley, Ruakuri Caves, £2OO. —Backblock Vote 3.
