MAIROA.
(Own Correspondent.)
The social and dance held in the school on Friday evening was. a most successful function, by far the best yet held in the district. The doubtful state of the weather and the bad state of the roads, did not deter about forty settlers, some with their children, from being present. During the evening Mr H. Voyce on behalf of the settlers, made a presentation to Mr and Mrs Jones, theirs having been the first wedding celebrated at Mairoa, Mr Jones suitably responding,. A larger programme than usual was gone through, the following contributing: Mrs Summerfield, Miss Harwood, Pegg, Armstrong, Cranston, Main, J. Voyce, and H. Voyce. Mr Pegg in a character sketch in which he had sold his old one-eyed horse, and afterwards found it to be blind, suddenly concluded by asking "Why was that old horse like the Mairoa School" answering "because it had lost the only lamp it had." Dancing proceeded until about four a.m., then with the singing of "Old Lang Syne" and cheers for the organisers, and the ladies responsible for the supper provided, concluded this most successful function.
