The sly grog trade apparently has irresistible fascinations for certain classes of people and the prohibited area of the Rohe Potae has always been a favourite resort of the illicit trader. Ohakune has been coming into prominence of late in this respect, and at the last sitting of the S.M. Court, several penalties were inflicted on persons for breaches of the Act. A man named Findlay was fined £SO or three months imprisonment for keeping liquor for sale; John Mercer was fined £5 for selling whisky to a Native, and a similar amount for keeping liquor for sale, and William Ingram for carting whisky to a man knowing the same was for sale was mulct in £25, or two months imprisonment.
