MANGAPEHI.
| (Own Correspondent.) j The Great White Fleet, bringing j our cousin Jonathan, has arrived in ' Auckland at last, and according to all ! accounts his welcome is as affectionI a'.eiy cousinly as he couki desire, "Very few local residents journeyed North to assist in 'the welcoming festivities chiefly owing to the fact that the directors decided not to close the mill during Fleet Week. However, some cf the Fleet enthusiasm has travelled over all the 142 miles to Mangapehi, as is evidenced by the plentiful display of the Star-spangled Banner, in company with the Union Jack on local flagstaff's. The prolonged spell of fine weather still continues, with a marrow-piercing frost each morning. The weather is constituting quite a record for itself, considering the time of the year. Last Saturday was such a beautifully line day that it enticed several players to the Tennis court, and Messrs Rist, McCracken, Seymour, and Hayson spent the afternoon in playing several enjoyable and well contested games. The players talk of opening the court for the new season in a few weeks, and matches will probably be ar- ; ranged with Rangaroa, Te Kuiti, Manunui, and Taumarunui. The local QJub have lost a good player in the person of Mr W. White, who has lately removed to Manunui. His place will probably be filled in'the tournament team by Mr J. Rist, a promising'lefthanded player. The Boxing Club still continues to hold very successful evenings, especially on Tuesdays, when there is always a good attendance. Many of the constants evidence rounds of applause from the spectators, owing to the masterly way in which they are learning rto box.
