A TAUMARUNUI SENSATION.
i Constable Severely Assaulted. A somewhat sensational assault on a constable occurred at Taurnarunui on Thursday evening of last week. It seems that a man named McLean arrived by the express train with a case of whiskey, and started to walk back along the line in the direction of Taringamutu. Constable IMnher accosted McLean in the vicinity of the railway crossing and a struggle between the two men ensued. McLean, who is a very powerful man, overpowered the constable and handled him roughly. Fortunately some passers-by were soon attracted to the scene of the struggle, and the constable, who wasL taken home in a dazed conditionjb McLean was afterwards found near Taringamutu, and arrested. He was brought before the local justices on Friday, land remanded for eight days. Canstable Maher is confinfcd ) to his bed as the result of his injuries which include a broken rjb and numerous contusions.
