THE KING COUNTRY CHRONICLE. FRIDAY, JULY 31, 1908. KING COUNTRY TOWNSHIPS.

THE progress of a district is usually indicated to a marked degree in the condition of the township centres, and it is gratifying to sec that the King Country township residents are doing something to keep abreast of the general progress of the district. Unfortun-

atcly, under existing conditions in the matter of tenure, a general advance is rendered dinicnl'., and improvements on any extensive scale made impossible until legislative action is taken. Hnvscwr,

a deHna.'.e pronouncement bus been made by fee Government that aciion will be taken with regard to our townships, and it behoves the residents to unite for the purpose of representing their requirements to the authorities. A meeting is to be held at Te Kuiti on Friday evening to discuss the township question, and hopes are entertained that a scheme will be evolved worthy of recommending to the notice of the Government. Too much stress cannot be laid on the importance of such an object, and it is to be hoped the residents will take sufficient interest in the matter to consider and discuss the position on the broadest possible basis with a view to arriving at a definate policy, and one which can be safely and consistently subscribed to by all sections of the community. With a sound and well-considered project to recommend, the best possible course to adopt, would be to elect a delegate to proceed to Wellington to lay the proposals before the Authorities. The question is of such vital importance to the community that no urging should be necessary to secure a full meeting.
