LOCAL OPTION AND STATE CONTROL.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In a previous issue your correspondent "Outback" reviews my letter on the above question which appeared in the Chronicle of the 26th ult. The tone of criticism Ido not find fault with, but the misconstruction placed upon my contentions generally, warrants my replying. In the first place the object of my letter was to draw attention to the disabilities the King Country generally was under in being deprived of the same facilities of voicing their opinions as other parts of the Dominion. The fact that this privilege is in iconnecttionwith the kcensing law is of secondary consideration to me, and my previous attitude is not shaken in any way after perusing " Outback's " ambiguous letter. The principle at stake must* not be saddled with any particular question, and it is surely to be expected that every citizen should claim the right to say Aye! or Nay! to questions of vital interest to the whole community under one Administration. Your correspondent, referring to the agreement as arranged between the Maoris and the Government at the turning of the sod in starting the railway through the King Country, does not strengthen his position, as it is recognised that there has been no protest against the Government for breaches of other parts of the agreement, and a fight is only put up when the validity of the ban of 'prohibition in the King Country is questioned. The present advanced state of our district justifies the vote being taken, and in no way, to my mind, is the present Administration justified in holding back from us the right to settle the question, particularly' as the circumstances are entirely different to those existing at the time of the mutual arrangements betweemthe parties concerned. The opportunity of replying to other criticisms of " Outback" on License and State Control will be availed of in your next issue as this letter is devoted to the" greater issues." J.H.T.
