MANGAPEHI.
(Own Correspondent.) The local Boxing Club opened its 1908 season on Tuesday evening, arid the names of about fifteen members have been handed in. An energetic committee has been elected, with Mr Wall as Secretary and Treasurer, and under their control a very successful season is anticipated. Mr E. Wade has been appointed Boxing Instructor and Mr T. Hill has charge of the gymnasium division. An early affiliation with the Auckland Boxing Association is to be solicited. On the opening night several well-contested rounds'were fought between Messrs Cahill and Ellis; Milard and McCracken ; Adams and Hayson ; Hoy and Ellis ; Walsh and Leatham and Irvine and Hayson, in which the honours were even. Very heavy frosts were experienced here this week. The local sportsmen seem to be having a fair amount of luck, several fine cock pheasants having been bagged lately. Mr A. McCracken's gun has been doing the greater share of the killing. Many fine bags of wild pigeons are also reported, the birds being now in good condition. The local school still remains in its congested state. Between 30 and 40 children, of all standards, are daily packed into the 20 by 15 foot room. The advent of the new school building is anxiously watched for by parents, scholars and teachers. Messrs Ellis and Burnand's second local timber mill is rapidly nearing completion and, when finished, it is expected to be the cause of largely
increasing the population, owing to the extra hands it will employ. It is rumoured that four Government houses are to be erected here, owing to Mangapehi becoming a tablet station. ■ The youngest daughter of Mr W. O. Irvine had a narrow escape from drowning on Friday last, falling from a footbridge into the Mangapcina stream, which was then in a tlooded condition. The father on being apprised of the state of things, promptlv plunged in and recovered her under the surface about twenty yards lower down. The little girl was :brought round in a quarter of an hour, and is now fullv recovered. The local branch of the St. John's Ambulance Association continues to make good progress under the able lecturing of Dr Zobcl. It is expected that a good many members will be presented for examination shortly.
