FOOTBALL.
Nehinehinui v. Piopio. The above match was looked forward to with keen interest, on account of the three teams now left in the cup fixtures being equal in games. The match was played on the Domain, which, through the heavy rain that had fallen during the week, was almost a sea of water... However, the presence of water did not mar the interest, and a good number of spectators turned out to witness the game. Although the match was very even at the commencement, the Nehinehinui's were pressing Piopio very hard. The local men indulged in some good passing rushes, and Grey, taking a neat pass, made a splendid run, and kicking, centred the ball, and Hikaka, following up, scored. The kick at goal was unsuccessful. Until halftime no further scores were registered. Upon resuming Piopio rallied, and played with a good deal of dash, and at times the local's territory looked in danger of invasion, but the situation was saved by Hira. From some good line work the Nehinehinui's broke away and a try seemed inevitable, but the ball went out of bounds. Piopio again made another desperate dash and succeeded in getting into their opponent's 25, Coburn making a desperate attempt to. score, but was grassed. Some good passing was indulged in by Tumanako, Campbell, and Coburn, who were playing consistently. From a scrum J. Hetet snapped the leather and quickly transferred to Taylor, but that player over-ran the ball, and a certain try was lost to the local men. From some line-out play, Grey succeeded in getting the ball, and scored. The kick at goal failed to add the major points. Shortly after time was called the scores standing: Nehinehinui 6 points, Piopio nil. Mr Lusk acted as referee.
On account of the very wet day, and the almost impassable state of the Oparure road, the match, Oparure v. Te Kuiti, was postponed, and will probably take place on Saturday w r eek.
The British football team is apparently on the up-grade in the matter of form. On Saturday last, at Wellington, the test match resulted in a draw, the visitors scoring 3 points and the chosen of the Dominion 3 points. At Napier, 0:1 Wednesday, the game proved a good thing for the Britishers who won by 25 points to 3 after a very fast game.
