MANGAPAPA NOTES.
A meeting was held in the Maqjjjf* papa schoolroom, on the 17th inst., to discuss the action to be taken by this end of the district, in relation to the proposal of the Ohura Settlers' Association to form a new County for (ihura. Mr W. A. Carter was voted to the chair, and briefly stated the objects for which the meeting was called. M 1 Geisler moved, and Mr Box seconded, that the settlers in and around Mangapapa endorse the action of the Settlers' Association in taking steps to form an Ohura County.—Carried. Mr Box moved, that Mr Carter be risked to act as representative for this district at the meeting to be held in Mangaroa to discuss the proposal on the 14th prox.—Seconded by Mr Smith, and carried unanimously. After considerable discussion, the tenor of which related to the general neglect of the present Ohura Settlers' Association in safeguarding the interests of this end of the district, Mr Owens proposed, and Mr Smith seconded the resolution, that a meeting be called at 2 p.m., on Saturday, June 27th, at Mangapapa school, to consider the advisability of forming a Settlers' Association for this end of the district. —Carried unanimously.
The married ladies of the district arc giving a leap-year ball here on the 3rd prox. They are at present very busy sending out invitations to friends, far and near, to be present at this function.
The settlers of Northern Ohura have taken up the matter of procuring a medical man for the district with great heartiness. Promises of assistance have already come in to the extent of £200; and, as a result of deputationising the Hon. Sir J. G. Ward, wc have an assured Government subsidy of £IOO per annum. It is now necessary to take steps to procure a thoroughly qualified and energetic practitioner, and the success of the scheme is assured. But for the parochial attitude of some of those at the head of affairs at Mangaroa, this step would not have been taken. It was the earnest wish of many of us to co-operate with them in their scheme —we held out the " olive branch " until we found that we could not do so any longer, with dignity or justice to ourselves; and, consequently, have initiated a scheme of our own.
