FOOTBALL.

All Comers v. Carpenters.

On Saturday last a football match, which was looked forward to with much interest by local enthusiasts, was played between the Carpenters and All Comers, in the Te Kuiti Domain, and resulted in a win for the latter by 6 points to 5, after a keen struggle. Soon after the kick-off it was seen that the game would be very even, though the All Comers had a very superior pack. The Carpenters were handicapped in this position by having to play a couple of novices of rugby. From the kick-off the All Comers with a good forward rush, carried the ball to their opponents 25, and the game continued there for some time. From a line out Tuheka got the leather and passed to J. Hetet, who transferred to Hereford, who put in a good run but was thrown out at the half flag. Play was for a time centred, but by some good passing rushes the All Comers . carried play into the Carpenters' 25, where from some good forward play, Ruru Bell crossed the line and scored the first try. Tohe made a good shot at goal but failed. The Carpenters then livened up, and almost immediately the forwards, headed by Vause and Percy, broke away, ana* putting" in some good foot work carried the ball right down the field, when F. Kerr, following up well, scored between the posts. Graham converted. Halftime was shortly called, the scores standing : Carpenters 5, All Comers 3. Soon after the commencement of the second half both teams made things interesting, but the All Comers having the advantage in the forwards, were not to be denied, and carried play into their opponents' 25. Time and again the All Comers were on the verge of scoring, but the opposing backs were equal to the occasion, and put in some good defensive work. From a scramble Warihi crossed the line, but was penalised for an infringement and a scrum awarded. Shortly afterwards the ball was grounded on the line, and another scrum followed, from which, for some off-side play, All Comers were awarded a free kick. Tche, punting high, followed up and grounded the leather, scoring the second try for All Comers. The kick at goal proved fruitless*. Time was then called, with the scores : All Comers 6 points, Carpenters 5 points. Mr Taylor acted as referee and gave every satisfaction.
