FOOTBALL.
ilnui Piopio (3). The Xehinehinui team Journeyed to ar.d met ins local team, on Saturday of last week. Taking a line through the form already displayed this season there was little to choose between the rival teams, though the Piopio fifteen was considerably stronger than the team which met and defeated Te Kuiti a fortnight previously. The game was hard fought from beginning to end, and right to the finish the issue was in d. vdot. Piopio certainly played the most attractive football, and. for that reason probably deserved to win. However, the fates were against them, and the visitors succeeded in placing two tries to their credit against one try scored by Piopio. A refreshing feature of the game was the mannerin which the Piopio men played to their backs and Hung the ball out. Hitherto the passing game has been neglected in the local football, and the games have been lacking in interest in consequence. The passing of Winiata, Campbell, Julian, Coburn and Elliott was much appreciated, and the try scored by Tumanako was well deserved. The Nehenehinui backs contented themselves with defensive tactics and confined aggressive play to the forwards. In the first spell Tohe scored a try from a forward rush, while W aralii registered a similar score in the second spell. Mr McMeckin was referee, and controlled the game efficient^. In the evening the visitors were provided with an excellent repast by the Natives in the Miroahuia Hail. After full justice had been done to the nice things set before them, a general conversation was indulged in by the members of both teams, football being the principal topic.
