MATIERE.
A block of land known as the Whatetokorua, comprising about 30,000 acres situate between Matiere and Onganie, has been purchased by the Government from the Natives, and is now being surveyed, with a view to settlement, by Mr Kensington and his party of surveyors. At the recent sale of township sections at Matiere, every section offered was sold, which speaks well for the district. The Auckland Education Board have now given grants for teachers' residences at Matiere and Mangapapa. which are to be erected in the spring. The tenders for the erection of a creamery and managers residence at Mangapapa for the Oliura Co-opera-tive Dairy Co., closed last Saturday, Mr H. Craven being the successful tenderer. A goc.d quantity of sheep are now being brought into the district. Evidently some of the settlers with larger holdings are finding them more profitable than cattle. - Great preparations are now being '"made by the Musical and Dramatic Society for their entertainment, which takes place on June 2nd. Considering the pains that are being taken they deserve a bumper house, which no doubt they will have, the object being to raise funds to line the Hall. On Saturday the Mangaroa footbailers journeyed to Matiere to play the second test match for the Ohura Football Association's banner, which was kindly presented by Mrs A. H. Hyde for competition. After a splendid game the match resulted in a draw, a try being scored for each side. The Matiere boys are stiil leading. During the evening the visiting team were entertained by the Matiere team to a dinner and smoke concert, which was held in the spacious dining room of Mr O'Brien's Private Hotel. The whole arrangements were carried out in a manner which left nothing to be desired. The following is a list of the toasts :—" Ihe King," by Mr A. H. Hyde, president; " The Mangaroa team," by Mr Le Cocq, responded to by Messrs Morpeth and Meredith ; " The Matiere team," by Mr Stevenson, responded to by Messrs Mossman and Towers ; "The Ohura Football Union " by Mr A. H. Hyde, responded to by Mr Meredith ; " The Ladies" by Mr McClenaghan, responded to by Mr Stanley ; " The Host and Hostess " by Mr Stevenson, responded to by Mr O'Brien. Between the toasts vocal and instrumental items were given, the whole concluding about II p.m., when the verdict was that one and all had spent a most enjoyable evening.
