HOCKEY.

Despite the inclement weather which prevailed on Empire Day, the Taumarunui hockey team journeyed to Te Kuiti, and met the representatives of the local club. The visit had been looked forward to by the Te Kuiti players, as it was the first occasion upon which they were to measure their strength against an outside combination. The game has only been started locally this season, but has already sprung into popularity, and with the opportunity for regular matches would, doubtless, become firmly established in the favour of both players and public. The weather in the afternoon of Monday, though, dull and threatening, proved fine enough to render play possible, and an excellent contest was witnessed, the visitors leaving the field victorious by four goals to two. Mr J. Nicholson was referee, and controlled the game efficiently. In the evening a social was held in the Hall by the players, and general regret was expressed at the inability of the Taumarunui team to be present. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, a considerable number of people attended, and by the hearty manner in which the dances went off it is evident that they did not regret facing the rain and muddy roads. The music supplied by Mr J. Hetet, was fully appreciated. Much praise is due to Mrs McColl and Miss Dalton for the manner in which they assisted the Committee with the supper. The evening's amusement terminated close on midnight. It is the intention of the Committee to hold these socials fortnightly during the winter months, the next taking place on Monday evening, June Bth.
